Today saw the long awaited announcement from Tony Blair that a General election will take place on Thursday 5th May.
At the start of what is likely to be a hard fought election campaign, the Liberal Democrat leader, Charles Kennedy, today sent a message of support to the three Parliamentary Candidates in the borough of Greenwich: Cllr Ian Gerrard (Eltham), Chris Le Breton (Greenwich and Woolwich), and Dr Steven Toole (Erith and Thamesmead).
Commenting, Cllr Ian Gerrard (Eltham) said:
"Charles Kennedy is right to wish the Liberal Democrats all the best for successful results in our constituencies as he has today. More and more people are looking to the Liberal Democrats to provide a real alternative to Labour and the Conservatives. And that is exactly what we are determined to do in this campaign locally.
Chris Le Breton (Greenwich & Woolwich), said:
"We will all be campaigning on positive solutions to people's everyday problems, addressing people's hopes and not playing to their fears. Our policies will bring improvements to people's lives across the borough, such as scrapping student tuition fees and providing free personal care for the elderly across the UK - just as we have already done in Scotland."
Dr Steven Toole (Erith and Thamesmead) said:
"In the weeks ahead in the campaign we will be making clear just what our policies would mean for local residents. Our plans to scrap council tax for example will mean thousands of pensioners and those without an income no longer have to pay anything. Across the borough people would pay millions less than they do now.
Charles Kennedy, Liberal Democrat leader, said:
"There are no no-go-areas for the Liberal Democrats at this election. We are aiming to take seats from both Labour and the Conservatives in every part of the country. We are united, working hard and confident that we can make another great advance. This time we really can show the people of Britain that the Liberal Democrats are the Real Alternative."
