Eltham Market farce continues

August 8, 2005 10:00 PM

Cllr Brian Woodcraft (Middle Park & Sutcliffe) says that the saga of Eltham Market in the town centre has now become a farce.

Cllr Woodcraft questioned the council leader at a recent meeting about why the market, which was so actively and publicly promoted by the council, was cancelled after only one day.

It has been suggested that the market was cancelled because it breached the charter for Woolwich Market!

However the council leader replied to Cllr Woodcraft saying that it was only ever going to be a one-off trial and was not intended to be every week.

Cllr Woodcraft said "The council leader clearly doesn't know what's going on. His own deputy leader was quoted in the papers as saying 'It is great news for Eltham residents that they will now have an outdoor market on their doorstep every Sunday'. Either the leader or the deputy leader has misled local residents."

Liberal Democrat councillors will be pressing for the return of the Sunday Market, which was a great success when it started back in June.
