The Lyons Review local government funding has failed to tackle the unfairness of the council tax says Greenwich Borough Liberal Democrats' finance spokesman Mark Pattenden.
Commenting on the publication of the Lyons Report, Mark Pattenden, a chartered accountant and former councillor for Eltham South, said:
"After three years Sir Michael Lyons has only recommended tinkering around the edges of council tax bands rather than addressing the fundamental unfairness of taxing people on their property rather than their ability to pay."
"Fiddling the tax bands and revaluing properties will only increase unfairness. Look at Wales, where this has already happened, one-third of households ended up paying even more tax than before!"
"Sir Michael Lyons should have had the courage to admit that council tax was a bad idea when it was introduced by the Tories in 1993 and it should be replaced as soon as possible with a local income tax, so that the amount people should pay is linked to the amount they can afford to pay."
