The decision by London Mayor Ken Livingstone to support re-development of the GAA sports ground in Avery Hill Road is a kick in the teeth for local residents, says local Liberal Democrat campaigner Mark Pattenden.
Previously the Mayor had joined local residents and campaigners in opposing the plans to build hundreds of homes on the former sports ground. However at the end of the recent public inquiry the Mayor changed his mind.
Eltham South Liberal Democrat Mark Pattenden, who recently spoke out against the plans at the public inquiry, said:
"By announcing his u-turn right at the end of the inquiry, Mayor Livingstone has betrayed local residents.
"These development plans were bad for the local community and the local environment when they were first announced. The developers have introduced only minor changes in the hopes of buying off opposition. Apparently it was enough for Mayor Livingstone. He has sold out local residents for a mini soccer pitch!"
