BBC poll shows 60% support Lib Dems' plan to axe council tax
A recent BBC poll shows that 59% oppose the council tax and that a similar number support replacing it with a local income tax based on the ability to pay.
The poll was conducted by NOP for the BBC and comes two weeks before the publication of the Lyons Report into local taxation.
Property bands are currently based on the value of properties in 1991 and fail to take into account sharp increases in property prices or home improvements adding value. Council Tax also fails to take ability to pay into consideration.
The Liberal Democrats would abolish the council tax and replace it with a local income tax.
