Liberal Democrat proposals to cut councillors' allowances by £45,000 in Greenwich were voted down last night by Labour.
The Liberal Democrats wanted to cut the number of councillors who receive the special responsibility allowance. At present 10 out of the 36 Labour councillors receive at least £22,000 for being members of the cabinet. This makes Greenwich one of the largest cabinets in London. The Liberal Democrats suggested that this should be reduced to 8, in line with many other London councils.
However when it came to a vote, Labour voted to keep the money.
Liberal Democrat Council Group Leader Cllr Brian Woodcraft commented "Given the conduct of Labour MPs at Westminster, it isn't surprising that Labour councillors won't give up their allowances. What is more surprising is that the Tories abstained!
"Labour are clearly more concerned about their own pay than saving money, but it is clear that the Tories can't be trusted to stop them either."
