Greenwich Borough Liberal Democrats have condemned local Labour MPs for failing to back new plans to help cut heating costs for local families.
The Fuel Poverty Bill being put through Parliament by Lib Dem MP David Heath would help help thousands of local people by cutting heating costs for the poorest families and pensioners. It would also help the environment by improving energy efficiency in homes.
But local Labour MPs Clive Efford (Eltham), Nick Raynsford (Greenwich & Woolwich) and John Austin (Erith & Thamesmead) all failed to back the plans in a vote in Parliament yesterday.
Local Lib Dem campaigner Mark Pattenden commented "Energy costs have doubled in recent years. But it is the poorest families and pensioners that are hit the hardest. Some face the choice between heating and eating.
"These new plans will help change this. They will also help cut Bills for everyone through making our homes more energy efficient.
"It is a disgrace that our local Labour MPs didn't turn up to support measures that would help thousands of their constituents."
The Fuel Poverty Bill is backed by leading groups including Friends of the Earth, Age Concern and the Child Poverty Action Group.
