Liberal Democrat Autumn Conference today backed wide-ranging proposals to create a sustainable economy, build a fairer Britain and clean up politics.
The plans are contained in the party's policy paper A Fresh Start for Britain: Choosing a Different, Better Future and include measures to:
Put people back to work and combat climate change by investing in green jobs
Break up the banks to prevent them taking risks which threaten the whole economy
Cut taxes for people on low and middle incomes, funded by closing loopholes for the rich and green taxes, ensuring that no one pays a penny on the first £10,000 of income they earn
Tackle entrenched disadvantage through smaller class sizes, extra help for those struggling at school, cutting student debt and investing in training and jobs for young people
Cleaning up Westminster by reforming expenses and donations, and ensuring every vote counts
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg said:
"Political parties have to make difficult choices - where to cut, where to spend what little money there is. So it's more important than ever that parties are straight about the values and principles that will guide them through those choices.
"There is still hope for a different, better future - if we are brave enough to make a fresh start. The way things have always been done has got us into this mess, and it will never get us out.
"We need to build a fair society and a green economy, with opportunities for all our children, especially those from deprived backgrounds.
"This document sets out those priorities. They are the building blocks for our General Election manifesto. Building a fair society. Building a new, stable, green economy. And a fresh start for politics, free of corruption, shifting power to the people."
