Conservative Mayor of London Boris Johnson has slashed £16million from the Metropolitan Police budget this year in a move that will see 455 police officers cut by 2012.
"Lib Dems want to increase police on the streets and cut waste. For example the Mayor spends huge amounts on consultants and press officers. This money would be better spent recruiting people to fight crime," said Eltham Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman Steve Toole.
The Liberal Democrats on the London Assembly put forward proposals that would have seen 246 more front-line police officers across London.
Steve Toole continued "When he was first elected Mayor Boris Johnson promised to make fighting crime his number one priority. Cutting 455 police officers is an insult to Londoners and is a funny way to keep your promises."
