Greenwich West Liberal Democrat Council candidates Ian Gerrard and Lucy Mortimer and Parliamentary candidate Joseph Lee have vowed to fight for the future of the Queen Elizabeth College almshouses in Greenwich High Road.
The almshouses, which are home to 70 elderly residents, have stood on the site since 1818, and have been under threat of closure for over six months, and residents are uncertain as to their future.
Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Greenwich and Woolwich Joseph Lee said: "I met with residents of the Queen Elizabeth College this week, and I was disgusted to hear how upset many of them are over their treatment by the owners of the site."
Ian Gerrard added: "It is awful that the future of the College has not been made certain after all these months. Vulnerable elderly residents are being left in limbo, and they should be treated with much more respect than has been afforded to them so far."
"We are committed to ensuring the long term future of the College, and myself and my Lib Dem colleagues will do everything to ensure that the almshouses remain open and that the residents are treated fairly.
"Not only are the almshouses a necessity for local people, they are also an integral part of the history of our area. We cannot lose them."
